Program Adminstration

Dr. Larry Medsker is the Director of the GW Data Science Program, and a Research Professor in the Department of Physics. Previous to GW, he was a professor of physics and of computer science specializing in applied artificial intelligence and neural computing, in which field he has published books and numerous articles on hybrid intelligent systems.

Dr. Brian Wright serves as the Co-Director of the Data Science Master’s program. Previously, Brian has worked as Department of Defense employee, as a Subject Matter Expert at SAIC and managed a research institute inside the School of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He holds a BS in Economics, Master’s in Public Administration and is a PhD in Higher Education Administration. His research efforts are focused on using educational data to improve student outcomes and inform higher education administrative functions. 

Dr. Yongwu Rong is Professor of Mathematics as well as Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives in the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. His research ranges from pure mathematics to computational biology. He has served as PI for several interdisciplinary training grants including the Data-Driven Mathematics and Statistics Training, Education, & Research (Data MASTER) which is closely related to this program. Dr. Rong has been a strong advocate for the Data Science program, and has convened a group of faculty to discuss this initiative.
